You want this M3-powered Land Rover Discovery rally car

Last year, we saw a video that confused and delighted us in equal measure.

It started with the faint but famous sound of a BMW M3’s straight-six screaming from the left of the screen. A split second later, the recognisably boxy proportions of a Land Rover Discovery popped into shot. The noise was coming from that. Amazing. Better still, the driver approached a 180-degree hairpin, gave it a bung and got the rear wheels smoking. We wanted to know more. We wanted to own it. Now, those things can happen: the Amazing Disco M3 has just come up for sale.

It is an actual Land Rover Discovery 2 with an actual E36 M3 engine mounted in the middle, churning out 350bhp through an updated TD5 manual gearbox.

And it’s quite the build, with the diligent owner stripping and then strengthening the Disco with a full cage so that it meets all the MSA’s gruelling checks (it's currently eligible for racing at the Safari Rally). The engine has a tuned ECU, ARP big end bearing bolts, factory throttle bodies and is de-catted with a bespoke aluminium fuel tank with lift pump, swirl pot and Bosch high-pressure rally spec main fuel pump. One serious Discovery, then.

It was out with the old suspension and in with a Fox (at the front) and King coilover setup with 14-inches of travel and triple bypass shock absorbers at the rear. Then the viscous coupling from a Porsche 911 C4S was robbed and thrown in to send power to the front wheels, with limited-slip differentials in both axle. As you can see from the vid, this still allows for plenty of crowd-pleasing sideways action.

The sale includes spares with lots of new panels, oil coolers, and roughly three sets of wheels (six sticky tarmac tyres and six gravel tyres) as a Brucie Bonus. Plus, it’s currently finished in a Martini livery which adds at least 20bhp and makes it an instant classic.
