Lots of power and a squirt of nitrous is enough to see a Chevy hit 202mph

    John Hennessey is up to his old tricks again. Those tricks being able to make cars go very, very fast in localised parts of Texas.

    His latest victim is the new Chevrolet Camaro SS. It was modified to 750bhp then let loose on an 8.5-mile high speed oval, and came back having clocked a GPS verified top speed of 202.1 mph – the first new Camaro to do the double ton.

    About that modification. Hennessey’s horsepower minions got to work and upgraded it to ‘HPE600’ spec. In layman’s terms, that sees the naturally-aspirated engine gain CNC ported cylinder heads, camshaft and valvetrain upgrades, new headers, cats and a new intake manifold, plus an ECU remap. Total power? 605bhp at 6,500 rpm.

    Clearly, that's not enough. Tipping it over the hallowed 200mph try line required two bottles of nitrous oxide in the boot. That added another 146bhp to the party, bring the grand total to 751 bhp. And to make sure the car didn’t turn into a low-flying aircraft, the magnetic suspension was lowered 20mm. 

    Modifications complete, Brian Smith – the very same man who strapped himself to the Venom GT land rocket and did 270.49mph – hopped behind the wheel and gave it some throttle. All of the throttle. He returned minutes later having drawn a new line in the sand for 2016 Camaros.
