Tuner resurrects classic VW Golf ‘Country’ using a 316bhp Golf R

Delta4x4 ‘reinterprets’ the niche off-road Golf by adding much suspension travel

A German tuner by the name of delta4x4 has resurrected a classic, exceedingly rare name from the Volkswagen Golf’s long and storied back catalogue and stamped it onto a very unique Golf R.

There’s no official name for it because technically it’s still only a ‘concept’, but it’s a reinterpretation of the old Mk2 Volkswagen Golf Country. Delta4x4’s new version uses much of the same recipe of that old Alpine-pass hero, but sadly and inexplicably ditches the bull bars. Unlike its predecessor, it’s based on the performance version, so that means the Golf R’s four-wheel-drive setup and 316bhp/310lb ft 2.0-litre turbo engine.

As mentioned, it’s still just a concept but delta4x4 assure us it’s “feasible and compliant with TÜV regulations”. Indeed, the tuner said: “If enough interested parties are found, delta4x4 plans to bring a limited series of 25 vehicles to the market.”

Each conversion – not including the base Golf R of course – will cost around €35k and you’re looking at between six to nine months for the build. Sounds expensive for – essentially – a new set of springs and dampers and some fancy lights und wheels. Sling on some bull bars, however…
