Porsche 911 Turbo news - Same old tune? - 2008

Published: 24 Jul 2007

Is the Porsche 911 Turbo the most modified car in history?

Just when it seemed like every tuner in the land had already had a shot at fiddling and fettling Porsche's most powerful 911 (at least until the GT2 turns up later this year), another modding firm comes out the woodwork to try and squeeze more power from the Turbo's 3.6-litre six.

This is Swiss company Sportec's effort - a 572bhp conversion called the SP580.

Even with a new aerodynamic package to push the car into the ground for more grip, the SP580 is good for 211mph.

Nought to 62mph takes just 3.4 seconds, while the brakes have larger discs to cope with the increased performance.

Of course, there's a set of de rigueur 20-inch alloys, but the big news is that the SP580 is only a 'Stage 3' tune from Sportech.

Rumours abound of a 'Stage 5' effort which could put out as much as 800bhp. And, presumably, leave big folds in the tarmac as it passes.

Why, it could even be good enough to take the 'best 911 Turbo tune' crown. Until next week at least...
