Manhart’s take on the new BMW Z4 has 493bhp
New software and hardware gives the Z4 the same power as an M4 GTS
The new BMW Z4 M40i has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces a really rather healthy 335bhp and 369lb ft of torque. Would you really want any more in a two-door convertible sports car?
Yes, is the answer. Yes, you would. Thankfully, the folks over at Manhart are here to save the day. The German tuner has massaged that engine by fitting a bigger turbo and intercooler, as well as giving it a software update, so that it now chucks out 493bhp and a faintly terrifying 502lb ft of torque. That's the same brake horsepower as the no-frills M4 GTS. Crikey.
With that cloth roof folded away it should sound every bit as exciting too, as Manhart has fitted a new stainless-steel, quad-exit sports exhaust system. Set the sat nav to 'tunnel'.
There’s good news for those of you who don’t enjoy spending your weekends with a mechanic as well - the gearbox and suspension have both been upgraded for more hardcore setups that can cope with the power increase.
The exterior of the Z4 has been worked on too, with an ABS front and rear spoiler alongside an all-new and improved diffuser. With their penchant for tuning almost everything made in Bavaria, Manhart’s black and gold paint scheme is also quickly becoming a recognisable trademark. We’re liking it here – it certainly makes the Z4 look more aggressive and a little less frumpy.
And remember, the engine in this Z4 also went into the brand-new Toyota Supra, so don’t be surprised to see even bigger numbers when the tuners get their hands on that…
