Hell’s Chariot from Grease for sale

Published: 30 Jan 2014

At some point in our lives, we've all had to suffer the ignominy of musical theatre. But there's something curiously wonderful about Grease. It could be bouquet-haired proto-human, Olivia Newton-John, parading around in a paint-on jump suit, but it's probably the automotive relief, courtesy of Danny's 1948 Ford De Luxe, the Pink Ladies' 1948 Studebaker Commander, and ‘Crater Face" Leo's 1949 Mercury Custom.

And, for the first time ever, said 1949 Mercury Custom - the actual one from the film - is up for sale to the public. Lost for nearly 30 years, it was found in 2012, had its authenticity verified by its original builder, owner of the eponymous Customs by Eddie Paul, then fully restored in California. Which is its current home while it's for sale on eBay.

But don't worry, despite the ground-up rebuild, all the original stuff like the exhaust tips and dented front bumper (it rear-ended Travolta's Ford, remember?) are included in the sale. As are a set of recreated three-foot-long Boadicea wheel spikes (is this where Jeremy got the idea from?) used in the film to cut into Danny's car in the final race scene.

Elsewhere, the seller claims that it's fitted with an original rebuilt 1949 Mercury 255 engine and manual gearbox, as well as a set of period/film-correct white-letter tyres, and some recreated RAC508 Californian number plates.
