German tuners have modified our Rolls-Royce Ghost. With GOLD

Tuning house Spofec upgrades venerable Brit limo. Stiff upper lips tremble

Published: 11 Aug 2015

The problem with the Rolls-Royce Ghost – all 5.4 metres, 563bhp and £220,000 of it – is that it’s just too understated. And common. And slow.

Step forward, then, intriguingly named tuning company Spofec (sounds either like a mild skin condition or a traditional smoked sausage of some kind, no?) and its ‘Black One’ programme.

Yes, Spofec will, in exchange for a presumably significant pile of cash, transform your Ghost from an artfully restrained luxury limo suitable for transporting the most discerning royalty into, um, this.

You’ll spot the 22-inch matte gold alloys – wrapped in high-performance Pirelli tyres, because that’s what the Ghost really needed – and new, ventier front bumper described by Spofec as ‘sporty and elegant’, which promises to ‘further optimise handling stability’.

Less immediately apparent are racing-spec carbon ceramic brakes with vented discs, and a new sports exhaust system that saves a mighty 5kg. Neither upgrade – perhaps unsurprisingly – is to be found on the standard Rolls-Royce options list.

As you doubtless predicted, there is more power too, Spofec clearly regarding as woefully inadequate the 563bhp generated as standard by the Ghost’s 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12.

Shove is up to a treasonous 709bhp, along with 718lb ft of torque, helping the 2.4-tonne Ghost charge from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph due to, Spofec sagely notes, ‘tyre limitations related to the heavy weight’.

No word exactly how much you’ll pay to have your Ghost thoroughly Spofecked. A lot, we suspect. But hey, what price individuality?
