Do you want the first Ferrari Sergio? Yes. Yes you do

One of just six 605bhp roadsters ever built is coming up for auction

Published: 19 Apr 2018

This is the Ferrari Sergio. It is a yellow, V8-engined, limited edition roadster built to celebrate Ferrari’s longstanding – and fruitful – relationship with legendary design studio Pininfarina.

That’s why it’s called Sergio; to honour the late, great Sergio Pininfarina.

And you will want to honour Sergio, too, by suddenly and inexplicably finding incredible amounts of money to purchase it. Because this particular Serge is coming up for auction.

Why do you need it? First up, it’s rare. Only six were ever built, and this particular car was the first of the six-strong production run to be delivered to its owner.

Second, the body. Inspired by Pininfarina cars from the 60s and 70s, it’s a striking bit of design.

Finally, and most importantly, it is based on the Ferrari 458 Spider, retaining – in Ferrari’s words – that car’s wonderful “technological content” and “functional aspects of its cockpit”. Yet it boasts another amazing bit of ‘technological content’, because the Serge’s engine is, in fact, the engine from the Ferrari 458 Speciale A.

Which means a 4.5-litre, naturally aspirated V8 producing 605bhp, able to propel this yellow roadster from 0-62mph in just three seconds. In a world of – albeit very clever and very good – turbocharged V8s, the Speciale’s old n/a V8 is a work of unearthly goodness.

There’s a bonus reason too: this Sergio’s covered less than 124 miles (200km), so it's practically brand new.

No word on price, but expect a big one. It’ll go up for auction at RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale, which kicks off on 12 May.
