This is the Alpina B3 Biturbo

There are many of you out there who cried into your M-Power pillowcases when, a few years ago, BMW binned the straight six from the M3 and fitted a V8.

Well, this is not an M3, but it's faster and packs around the same power as the current M3, and does have a straight-six engine. Meet the new Alpina B3 Biturbo: primped, primed and ready for the Geneva Motor Show.

We'll get full details next week, but the salient details are encouraging. Alpina has taken the award-winning 3.0-litre six from the 335i, added in another turbo to make it a twin, and upped the power from 302bhp to 410bhp and 442lb ft of torque.

There's no six-speed manual on offer, only an eight-speed automatic, which somehow marshals those 410 horses to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 190mph. This is important, because the current, V8 M3 hits 62mph in 4.8 seconds and hits a limited top speed of 155mph. See? Faster.

Apparently, it also returns some 40.9mpg (though good luck achieving that with 410bhp at your disposal), while emissions sit at 177g/km of CO2. Compare that to the M3 Coupe's 290g/km and 22.8mpg combined average, and you find progress, dear reader.

Of course, the M3 is a proper M-Division product, honed and developed for one purpose, and is definitely not a tarted up 335i. We'll have to drive the new B3 to decide if it can match the M3's mighty depth of talent...
