This is a 204mph, 732bhp Mercedes-AMG CLS 63 Shooting Brake
Merc discontinued the V8 five-door years ago, but one tuner has resurrected it
They literally do not make them like this anymore, because Mercedes discontinued the old V8-engined, AMG CLS Shooting Brake years ago; the desirable, moderately looney five-door was destined to only ever survive one generation of CLS.
This saddened Pogea Racing boss and founder Eduard Pogea enough to build his very own “unicorn”, which is the stealth grey CLS you see before you. TopGear.com takes no responsibility for your inevitable wasted day searching the classifieds for old V8 CLS estates.
Let’s start with the beating heart of any AMG. The 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 was treated to a modified turbo, a bigger intercooler and coolant pump, and a ‘Stage 3’ tune for the seven-speed automatic gearbox. Power rises from 577bhp to 732bhp, while torque now stands at a moderately ludicrous 821lb ft.
And how’s this for punch? According to Pogea, the CLS clocked 204mph (329kmh) and “the owner did not try to see whether the speedometer would have gone further. In any case, the forward pressure does not break off”. Forward pressure. Huh.
Elsewhere, KW Automotive worked on an adjustable suspension setup for the front axle, and Pogea reprogrammed the airmatic rear setup to lower the whole car by 25mm overall. A set of 20in forged alloy wheels are wrapped in Michelin PS 4S rubber, and the entire body was repainted in Pogea’s trademark ‘stealth grey’.
There are carbon fibre elements inside and out, a massive audio setup, an Android-driven 12.5in touchscreen and some wifi.
Pogea has nicknamed his car ‘Lorenzo’, and is proud of its duality, able to “move beyond 300kmh (186mph) and feel safe and relaxed”, or indeed “allow drives with 8.8l/100km (32mpg)”.
“One of the last CLS Shooting Brakes that rolled off the line has received a very extensive, effective, powerful but also conservative refinement,” the company says. It’s a one-off, but if you’ve got an old Shooting Brake knocking around and like what you see, you know what to do.
