Mini Cooper SD announced

Published: 02 Feb 2011

This is the Mini Cooper SD, and it is the most powerful diesel ever slotted into the not-actually-that-small supermini.

The hatch, drop-top, Countryman and Clubman are now being offered with BMW's 2.0-litre four-pot oil burner producing 143bhp and 225lb ft of torque - more torques, incidentally, than any other Mini including the JCW editions.

Together with a lightweight (22.8kg) six-speed ‘box, the Cooper SD hatch accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and tops out at 134mph, while emitting 114g/km of CO2 and returning 65.7mpg.

The Cooper SD Minis also get brake energy generation, start/stop, a shift point display and electric power steering.

The Mini declares its performance/thrift combo in the form of a new front apron with an extra large air intake, twin exhaust pipes at the back and an ‘eye catching' roof spoiler. Not actually something that will catch your eye out, unless you look at it, like, really closely.

Elsewhere in the Mini range, you can now opt for a Sports Pack for the hatch and convertible, which fits traction control, an electronic differential lock control, 17s and new front and rear aprons.

There's also a Mini Clubman ‘Hampton' edition (blue metallic paint, standard ‘Chili' pack, 17 twin-spoke alloys and Mini 50 Hampton badges) and a ‘Pimlico' edition (laser blue paint, 16s and Pimlico badges). Yeah, us neither.

Prices for the Cooper SD start at £18,750 for the hatch (£3k more than the Cooper D) and rise to £23,190 for the 4WD Countryman.
