Everything you need to know about cars this week: 15 Mar '20

A drive in the Rimac C_Two, Tesla builds its millionth car and EVERYTHING is cancelled

  • BMW X6 xDrive30d review: yes, it is A Car

"This is a rational, objective assessment of a car that has, in its previous two generations, sold upwards of 443,000 examples worldwide. Had it only sold about four, we could discount it as an irrelevance. It pains us to say this, but people seem to like this kind of car."

  • Bentley Continental GT review: is the V8 more fun?

"Well, this is hardly a Dacia Sandero where ‘entry-level’ means black rubber bumpers and a gaping hole where there ought to be a radio. A ‘basic’ Bentley really isn’t basic at all. This is still a stupendously well-appointed vehicle, and its 550bhp 4.0-litre V8 isn’t what you’d call meek."

  • Why did Bentley kill off the Mulsanne?

"The car is being given a fairly dignified death, with a limited run of 30 called the 6.75 Edition. So named because with the end of the car also comes the end of the great old pushrod V8, which has been continually developed for 60 continuous years of production by the company."

  • What do you make of the new RUF Rodeo Concept?

"This, explains legendary Porsche tuner RUF, is an off-road car. It is called the RUF Rodeo, is based on a specialist carbon fibre monocoque chassis, and is part-inspired by Ralph Lauren."

  • Rimac C_Two prototype review: world exclusive drive of 1,887bhp EV

"What Rimac claims to have created with the C_Two is a technical tour-de-force that can reach 100mph in 4.3 seconds and run a quarter mile in the low nines - usually the preserve of something that also features drag slicks and a wheeliebar. It will manage some 340-miles on a charge (WLTP), and be able to charge to 80 per cent range in just half an hour on a fast charger. More pertinently, it will have four-wheel drive and insanely complicated torque vectoring, active aero and sophisticated battery management to prevent performance drop off."

  • Review: Vauxhall Corsa-e

"The Corsa's gone EV with as little risk as possible, and ought to be a doddle to drive every day as a result."

  • This is Tesla’s 1,000,000th car

"Founded by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003, it’s taken the Californian company some 17 years to reach the million-car milestone. Elon Musk (and his chequebook) came onboard in 2004, two years before the first-gen Roadster was revealed and four years before it would actually go on sale."

  • Grazie, Italia: eight things that make Italy great

"After a quick confab in the office revealed that none of us are epidemiologists, we decided that the best we could offer is a tribute to all the things that make Italy great. Hopefully, it’ll remind Italians that, while they will have to sit things out for a while until this all calms down, what they’ve achieved up to this point has already earned them a lifetime achievement award."

  • UK budget: no fuel duty rise, EV grant extended

"Now the government is on an electric bender (current plans will see petrol and diesel engines taken off sale in 2040), ministers are looking at ways to encourage us all into zero emission vehicles, so it looks like we’ll see fuel duty increases this time next year."

  • It's time to celebrate the amazing BMW i8's life

"Back in 2014, the BMW i8 won the motor industry’s most prestigious award as it was crowned the Top Gear magazine Car of the Year. We liked it a lot, and so it was with great sadness that we learnt production of both the coupe and roadster would stop in April this year. So, with that in mind and the clock ticking furiously down, we decided to go back through the TG archives to find our favourite shots of the futuristic plug-in hybrid sports car. Here goes…"

  • Millionaires: here’s how to spec your McLaren Elva

"The McLaren Elva is a £1.4m, 804bhp, roofless, windscreenless supercar. It already belongs in the top one per cent of stunning and striking road cars. So, just how on earth do you improve it?"

  • This is Anthony Joshua’s one-off 560bhp Range Rover

"Yep, Land Rover created this one-off Rangie specifically for Big Josh, and specifically for his upcoming title defence against Kubrat Pulev. Ferrying around 18-odd stone of finely-honed boxer requires something equally heavy-handed, one suspects."

  • Zenvo’s mad 1,177bhp hypercar is now a hybrid

"The car with the wildest wing in the world is back. Yep, Zenvo’s TSR-S has been given a raft of updates to make sure the 1,177bhp Koenigsegg rival is still relevant in the fast-moving (in more ways than one) hypercar space. It’s all buzzwordy stuff, too, including hybrid assistance and carbon fibre. Truly, you can never have enough carbon fibre."

  • Gemballa’s making a crazy salute to the 959 Dakar

"Sheesh. You wait more than three decades for a legendary 80s tuner to make an off-road Porsche 911 then… boom - two come along in the same week. Madness."

  • Why don’t actual BMWs look this good?

"No, the Coupe 2020 Concept isn’t the work of BMW itself – c’mon, the grille is way too small – but a Ukrainian designer called Vladimir Panchenko. And isn’t it just the prettiest ‘BMW’ you’ve seen in years?"

  • The 2020 F1 season won't start until May

"Following the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix due to coronavirus, the FIA and F1 have announced the postponement of both the Bahrain and Vietnam GPs."

  • Mercedes-Maybach S650 review: top-tier Merc S-Class tested

"On the face of it there aren’t many differences between the Maybach and a normal S-Class - the ‘Bach has lots more chrome trim, a new deeply unattractive grille and different wheels, among other things. It’s all designed to appeal to the Chinese, Russians and so-on - places where more chrome equals more luxury, and where Maybach is comparatively popular."
