This limited edition Maybach is the end result of Virgil Abloh’s Merc collaboration

Mercedes posthumously launches the sandy Maybach by Virgil Abloh. Will be limited to 150 cars

Published: 07 Apr 2022

You may well be aware that – before his sad death at the end of November 2021 – Mercedes had been collaborating with the extremely talented Virgil Abloh.

Now, as well as being the founder of fashion brand Off-White and the men’s artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Abloh was a man with the longest job title in the world. It read something like: polymath artist, architect, creative director, fashion designer and philanthropist, Virgil Abloh.

Back in September 2020, Mercedes unveiled the first car that came from its collaboration – the racecar-inspired G-Wagen known as Project Geländewagen. Then, in December last year we were shown the Project Maybach – an all-electric off-road coupe concept thing that had been dreamt up by Abloh and Mercedes design chief Gordon Wagener.

Now we’re finally seeing the last car to come from the project, and it’s one that you’ll actually be able to buy. Well, if you’re extremely well off and can afford a limited-edition Maybach, that is.

Yep, the Maybach by Virgil Abloh you see above will be limited to just 150 units. Based on a fully-laden Mercedes Maybach S Class S680, it’s finished in a special two-tone paint with obsidian black up top and a sandy colour down below. We’re loving those body-coloured monoblock wheels too.

Inside there’s a matching colour scheme, as well as the Maybach four-seat layout and lots of special badging. Merc says there’s actually a bespoke user interface for the infotainment too, with different icons and graphics to set it apart from a ‘normal’ Maybach.

Just so terribly common, those Maybachs, aren’t they?
