Lamborghini’s new SUV: this is the Urus

No, your eyes haven't deceived you. You really are looking at a Lamborghini SUV. More specifically, the Lamborghini Urus SUV. Sit down and pay attention at the back.

This new Urus SUV is only a concept for now, and as expected, derives its name from the world of bulls: the Urus - also known as the Auroch - is a ludicrously-shouldered ancestor to today's cattle.

But this is "the Lamborghini for everyday use, for the family," we're told. It is intended to be used as a daily driver, emit a lower CO2 figure than rivals, have space for four adults, for luggage and - shock! - for shopping. Thankfully, Lamborghini has tempered this utility by targeting a 600bhp power output and permanent four-wheel-drive with traction control. Best strap up those eggs, then.

The Urus also promises lightweight construction both inside and out, and will be "considerably lighter" than its competitors; the body will feature a height adjustable front spoiler that allows obstacle clearance, but also stability at high speed when lowered. There's another adjustable spoiler at the back to better aid aerodynamics and handling, and you only need to look at the X6 and those of it's ilk to know amazing feats of cornering are possible in an SUV. Oh, and speaking of the X6, the Urus sits 4955mm long, 1996mm wide and 1660mm high, versus the Beemer's 4877mm/1983mm/1690mm.

It's a strict four-seater inside, with that famous Lamborghini obsession for lightweight carbon fibre manifesting itself through flexible CF bucket seats and a central CF tunnel only partially clad in leather. There are touchscreens on the centre dash and for the rear passengers, while the driver gets a freely programmable TFT screen behind that funky steering wheel.

Prices are expected to sit between the Gallardo and Aventador, so around £150k and you're about there. And be under no illusion as to how it will sell: for reference, the Cayenne has rung the Porsche cash registers so comprehensively, the company can afford to make the new 911 quite possibly the most complete sportscar on sale today. So yes, the Urus will probably sell lots. Lamborghini has identified the USA, Middle East, Russia, China, Germany and us Brits as core buyers, with an expected 3,000 being sold each year.

Says Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO: "SUVs make up one of the most successful market segments worldwide, and the Urus is the most extreme interpretation of the SUV idea: it is the Lamborghini of the SUVs."

Oh, and we'll have none of this adenoidally-charged "oh they shouldn't be making SUVs", because they already have. It was the Lamborghini LM002, built between 1986 and 1992. And being a Lambo SUV meant it got the 5.2-litre Countach V12 with 444bhp and a top speed of 130mph. In fact, the very first model was delivered to the King of Monaco.

And it would be wise to remember Ferrucio Lamborghini's early industrialism following his release from British captivity as a prisoner of war in 1946. He built tractors from ex-military vehicles.
