LA Motor Show

Stunning Merc four-seat eco car

Published: 16 Nov 2010

This is the Mercedes Biome concept, and it is not made, but 'grown'.

Usually, a carmaker announces a concept and marries it to some styling direction or actual technology which is being trialled. This mentions neither. It's part of the 2010 Los Angeles Motor Show's design challenge to create a concept weighing in under 1,000lbs.

It does, however, come with a 'fantasy' story which says the Merc Biome concept is 'grown' in a nursery, collects energy from the sun using a fluid called BioNectar4534, releases pure oxygen, is compostable, and customer options - like sat nav, leather et al - are 'genetically engineered' into the famous three-pointed star.

The wheels are grown separately, which is why they appear to not touch the ground. Not so handy when trying to flee an enraged Elm tree.

Alternatively, you could go with our story, in which a ferocious hobgoblin with a penchant for cage-fighting captured the Ork princess and was defeated by a hairy vegetarian cyclist who remoulded the beast to form this bug-eyed concept.

Still, looks good, no?  We'll have more news from LA as and when it drops, so check back. In the meantime, how would your 'fantasy' concept work?
