James May news - May's future - 2008
Now, would you imagine James May’s ultimate car of the future to be a Rolls Royce decked out in red velour, that comes with a matching smoking jacket?
Or perhaps something that resembles a Bentley on the outside and a cosy pub in the Lake District on the inside?
Well, the truth is, his dream car actually flies and is powered, not by petrol or diesel or anything you can get hold of, but by antimatter. And he has a secret hankering for speed, as he reveals in the current edition of Focus magazine.
The car would, he says, be capable of “transonic speeds” at high altitude and inside it would at least have some kind of gadgetry to keep us all entertained.
“There would probably be on-board entertainment for anyone too dull witted to simply enjoy the view,” he says.
His ideas were brought to life by Ceri Yorath, a graduate from the prestigious vehicle design course at the Royal College of Art in London.
Ans as well as finding out what James’ ultimate car looks like, the Focus team wanted to know what we’ll really be driving 20 years from now, so they got Top Gear mag’s consultant editor, Paul Horrell, to speak to the motor industry’s movers and shakers to find out.
Annoyingly, antimatter doesn’t figure in their current plans, but their ideas are pretty radical, only to find out you'll have to get the November edition of Focus.
