Woohoo! The Volvo V60 and V90 estates are coming back to the UK
Following a ‘resurgence’ in demand, Volvo’s bringing booted cars back
Well done, people of the United Kingdom. Give yourselves a hearty pat on the back. Volvo has changed its mind and will now restock this sceptred isle with its V60 and V90 estates from next month.
This news comes almost a year after it announced it would kill off its saloons and estates in the UK, for obvious reasons (read: ruddy SUVs, innit). Why the U-turn? Over to Volvo.
“We removed the V60 and V90 from sale in the UK last August amid falling appetite for estate cars,” a Volvo Cars UK spokesperson told TopGear.com. “While this remains a long-term trend, we have seen a resurgence for our estate products in recent months and have decided to reintroduce the V60 and V90 to our UK portfolio in response to this. We will begin taking orders next month.
“When operating in a fast-moving industry, we continually re-evaluate our product portfolio to ensure we have the right mix to serve all our customers. As part of this process, it is not uncommon for us to remove certain models or derivatives from sale and reintroduce them later."
Really? We don’t remember the old V90 disappearing then shuffling back into the family portrait months later. The dearly departed XC70 hasn’t made a comeback. Neither has an engine with more than four cylinders. Or the C30 coupe-hatch thingy. Is it that uncommon after all?
We suspect the Swedes simply underestimated how many people out there just don’t want an SUV. Back to Volvo’s reasoning.
“We were thrilled by the many comments from customers and media last year, with many stories and memories of how our estate cars have been a huge part of their lives. We look forward to helping create more!”
That’s Volvo’s exclamation mark, not ours, so it’s clearly very happy about the return of the V60 and V90. As we are, too – handsome, leftfield estates that offered a pleasing alternative to the usually thrusting German offerings (as good as those cars are, of course).
As mentioned, both V60 and V90 will go on sale in the next few weeks, with the V60 offered as either a B4 mild-hybrid, or in T6 and T8 plug-in hybrid trim. The big V90 meanwhile, will be offered as a plug-in hybrid only, available in either T6 or T8 guise.
Right, what else shall we get Volvo to rebuild? How about the P1800? The petition starts here.
