This is the new, second-generation Kia Niro

Kia has revealed its brand-new, second-generation Niro crossover, and you’d be forgiven for not seeing any design lineage between the two models. Quite a departure from the first-gen car, you’ll agree.

Indeed, Kia tells us the new Niro has been completely redesigned, and takes the 2019 Habaniro concept into its production-ready flanks. That trademark ‘tiger face’ has been modified too, sweeping across the front and round to the front arches. It’s a bold look, complemented by those new LEDs sitting just beneath it.

It’s a fairly upright, squared-off silhouette, and while we haven’t been treated to proper pictures of the rear, there are vertical taillights said to highlight “aerodynamics and technology”.

As you’d expect from any self-respecting modern crossover, the interior offers much sustainability in the shape of recycled cabin materials (the headlining, for example, is made from old wallpaper). The dash has taken a significant uptick too: gone are the acres of black plastic, and instead there’s a large screen spanning the driver and centre console. Mercifully, it appears Kia has kept in a couple of physical knobs for the temp controls.

We’ve got a while to wait for full drivetrain info, but we’re told the new Niro will be offered as a HEV (hybrid electric), a PHEV (plug-in hybrid), and EV (um, electric). Plenty of time to digest those new looks, then...
