The first ever McLaren P1 is heading to auction

You don’t need us to tell you about the P1 these days, do you. If you’re anything like as weird as we are, you’ll have spent the past decade or so consuming every detail and morsel of information surrounding McLaren’s member of the so-called Holy Trinity.

So, a very very quick recap before we get onto the news of the day. The plug-in hybrid P1 combined its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 with a lightweight electric motor for a total output of 903bhp and 664lb ft of torque. The electric assist filled in the gaps left by the turbo’d combustion engine, so 0-62mph was dispatched in 2.8 seconds and 0-124mph took just 6.8 seconds. There was also much F1 tech, including a proper KERS system and even DRS.

Now to the reason why we’re here. The glorious Volcano Yellow P1 that you see in the images above is going up for sale at the Silverstone Auctions May Sale. Only 375 were built, so that’s already a fairly rare occurrence, but this particular example happens to be the very first P1 that was ever registered with a customer.

Yep, P1 no.1 was collected new back in 2013 and comes with a personal letter from Frank Stephenson to its first owner in the history file. It only has 3,666 miles on the clock too, and it had the all-important hybrid battery replaced back in 2018.
