VW reveals Golf GTI Cabriolet

Published: 29 Feb 2012

The Volkswagen Golf is probably the closest thing you can get to state-issued transport. Nobody looks bad in one, and they come in enough flavours to sate every reasonable whim.

And, in the new Golf Cabriolet GTI's case, a few unreasonable ones. It is a Golf, which means it has a respectable Euro NCAP rating. It is a Golf convertible, which means the roof will go up and down in 9.5 seconds and can be operated at to 18mph. And it is a Golf GTI, which means it has a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot, 207bhp, 207lb ft and gets to 62mph in 7.3 seconds.

Which makes it the most powerful rag-top Golf VW's ever built. Snazzy.

To trumpet its sportyness, VW has fitted a few GTI signposts. There's a red-rimmed radiator grille, swollen GTI bumpers, rear diffuser, 17-inch alloys and tartan sports seats.

But let's not forget the deliciously tedious stuff that makes it so... Golfy. Like automatically deploying rollover protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a driver's knee airbag as standard. Fruity.

We'll get more info when it's unveiled at next month's Geneva motor show.

In the mean time, tell us this: what do you think Jeremy - famous for his mixed views on the Golf GTI - will make of it?
