Volkswagen Golf GTI news - GTI Excessive: it’s excessive - 2010

Published: 14 May 2010

It isn't as mental as the W12 Golf shown in Worthersee three years ago, but we're surely not complaining.

This is the Golf GTI Excessive, a lightly angrified version of VW's perennial hot hatch unveiled at the Austrian owners' meet today.

It is a GTI, only more so. Thanks to a new exhaust system, power from the Golf's 2.0-litre turbo engine is boosted from 207bhp to 211bhp, while torque rises slightly to 211lb ft.

More significant is the Excessive's wider track, requiring 3cm wheelarch extensions on either side. They house new 19-inch alloys with bigger brakes, along with stiffer springs and dampers.

There's some excellently aftermarket jewellery going on, too. The Excessive gets a new front splitter and air dams, black sill extensions and a redesigned rear wing, all of which combine to give it - to use the technical term - a little added ‘grrrr'.

Here's the best bit: VW says that, if the GTI Excessive generates sufficient interest, it might offer the upgrades as a retrofitted accessories pack to existing MkVI GTI owners.
