SEAT unveils the new Ibiza Cupra

Published: 05 Nov 2012

The seasons have changed, which means a winter wardrobe is in order. And this year's fashion seems to be triangles. Lots, and lots of triangles. Lamborghini set the trend with its facelifted Gallardo, and now SEAT has added the new trend of tessellation and trigonometry to its new Ibiza Cupra.

We first saw the car as a concept at the Beijing motor show, but now Seat has taken the Concept number plate off... and that's about it.

We predicted that it'd be powered by a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and come with a DSG gearbox, and we were right, because this little Cupra gets a turbocharger and a supercharger - as well as direct injection - to kick out 180 PS and 250 Nm of torque.

This means 0-62mph is over in 6.9 seconds, and if you keep your foot in, it'll hit a top speed of 142 mph. If you don't mash the throttle to the floor you should see 47.9 mpg.

As this is the ‘Sporty Spice' spec of the Ibiza range, the car has been lowered and is equipped with a trapezoidal exhaust outlet. We're not sure if the triangulation adds any performance (probably not), but we do know that you can press a button to pump more of it's clamor into the cabin. You can also spec some AP brakes if you want to stop a bit quicker, too.

But as this is the top spec model, the Cupra gets climate control, rain-sensing automatic windscreen wipers, bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard. SEAT's Portable System - a removable five-inch screen integrated into the vehicle's electronics - also comes with the car and can act as a photoframe so you can look back at those sunny Aiya Napa holiday pictures as you're stuck on the cold, wet M1 in the middle of winter.

The car's due to arrive over here in Blighty in January 2013, priced at £18,825. So if you'd like a sporty, Spanish, triangley hot hatch, you may have to clear your wardrobe and add it to your Christmas list.
