A fast new Volkswagen Golf is coming next month

This shady teaser image will morph into a ‘Notably Fast Transporter’ in February

Published: 18 Jan 2022

Ready your Hats Of Mighty Speculation, because a new Volkswagen performance car is being launched next month, and there is absolutely zero information to accompany the shady teaser image you see above.

Volkswagen has left us with this message: “We’re launching an NFT (Notably Fast Transporter). Coming February 2022.”

From that we can comfortably deduce that this new car will be launched in February 2022, that it will be ‘notably fast’, and that it’ll be packaged up into the shape of a hot Golf. See the spoiler, the one thing we can make out from the teaser.

But what level of ‘fast’ will this new Golf take? The current Mk8 Golf R is a 316bhp four-wheel-drive hot hatch, that'll do 0-62mph in 4.7s (but probably able to go faster than that), and the ability to hit a limited top speed of 155mph.

That car also gets the option of a ‘Performance Pack, featuring bigger wheels, some MODES and that rear wing you can spot above. Interesting.

Anyway, could this new ‘NFT’ unlock a bit more charisma from the Mk8 R? We liked it – “an impressive evolution over the Mk7”, we said in our review. Is VW about to uncork a little more attitude? Or is it going to unleash the mother of all curveballs? Allow your speculations to run riot below.
