Video: this is what the Porsche 911 R sounds like

Headphones in, volume up: it's our first taster of the hardcore R in motion

This year’s Geneva motor show contained many stars, one of them being the Porsche 911 R.

If you’re not into your 911s, it's perhaps hard to comprehend what’s so exciting. At first glance it may appear the same old car, just with some questionable decals.

But if you extract the smallest ounce of happiness from driving a car, what lies beneath those stripes is all good stuff. Really good stuff: there's a tight, satisfying manual gearshift, the finest steering ever fitted to a modern 911 (Porsche’s words), and some of the best seats known to man.

Oh, and the wailing engine from the GT3 RS. And it really does wail, as the video above demonstrates. Okay, so the car isn’t being driven at its fullest - caution is being applied - and there’s some slightly intrusive rock music taking attention away from the car.

But there’s still opportunity to hear it sail towards its sky-high redline, and to sample some lovely rev-matched downshifts. Watch it and try telling us, as the new 911 R and its 1967 ancestor play on some Alpine roads, that you don’t want to have a go…
