Two new Alpines have been revealed

Alpine A110 sports car gets a posh, comfy version and a driver focused special

Published: 27 Feb 2018

You should know the Alpine A110 by now. “A terrific car, a genuine exponent of light weight and something pleasingly different to drive,” said this very website when we drove it.

The good news is more versions are coming. And soon. Alpine will use next week’s Geneva motor show to display the A110 Pure and A110 Legende, two new trims to join the Premiere version that’s about to go on sale.

While the Premiere is a well-specced launch edition – and 58,500 euros, or around £50k – the Pure is a lighter, more driver-focused and likely far more accessible version of the A110. No prices or weights or suchlike, but we’d expect it to shave a few kilos and many euros from the Premiere.

The Legende adds more “refinement and sophistication”, with six-way adjustable leather Sabelt seats and gloss carbon interior trim. It would make sense for Alpine to soften off its suspension and add some extra sound deadening, too, though details are once again scant.

What Alpine has told us is that both cars retain the same 249bhp 1.8-litre turbo engine as the A110 Premiere, linked to the same seven-speed paddleshift gearbox. So the Pure and Legende should still be as addictively good to drive, only with different approaches. If those are as successfully applied as the variations between the McLaren 540C, 570S and 570GT, Alpine’s surely onto a good thing.

We’re desperate to know UK prices, though. None have yet been revealed. If the Pure can get somewhere near £40,000, then it stands a very good chance indeed of getting people away from Porsche Caymans. We’ll know more at Geneva, next week…
