Four Xbox-exclusive games coming to PS5 and Nintendo Switch
Is this the beginning of the end for platform exclusives?
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has announced that four as-yet unnamed Xbox titles that were previously only available on team green’s platform are bound for PS5 and Switch.
Speaking on the official Xbox podcast, Spencer confirmed “we’ve made the decision to take four games to the other consoles”. Spencer left out the juiciest bit, however: we don’t know which four games he’s talking about.
All Microsoft has said to narrow it down is that two titles are community driven, and two are smaller titles. Answers on a postcard to: Just Tell Us Already Phil, Letsby Avenue.
The announcement follows a recent softening of the platform divides following Microsoft’s blockbuster acquisition deal that now sees them in charge of Call of Duty and Overwatch publishers Activision Blizzard. In 2023 Microsoft confirmed that despite the deal, COD would still appear on PlayStation for the next ten years. With this news, it appears the company’s doubling down on its commitment to share and share alike.
Inevitably, it’s set chins a-wagging about precisely which games PS5 and Switch owners are about to get access to. Unnamed sources have given The Verge some candidates, which we won’t reprint here but click away if you’re curious.
Taking a long view, it’s unlikely that business moves like this will be a one-off. On that same podcast, Spencer added that “I do have a fundamental belief that over the next five to ten years exclusive games… are going to be a smaller and smaller part of the game industry”. And as head of the company that owns not just a platform but many of the biggest studios making games, we’re inclined to take that as more than idle speculation.
