F1 24’s revamped career mode lets you pick from former legends or current F2 drivers
A handling overhaul and circuit improvements are also on the way
EA and Codemasters have dramatically swished back the covers on F1 24 and revealed the key gameplay details that virtual racers will be getting stuck into when it arrives on 31 May.
Top of the billing, to TG’s eye at least, is a revamped career mode which adds a new reputation system and inter-race objectives, and gives you the opportunity to race as one of the drivers on the current grid, for the first time in the mode’s history.
You can also take the likes of Zane Maloney or Andrea Kimi Antonelli from the current F2 grid and use them as your career mode avatar, or - probably the most exciting prospect of all - bring back one of a roster of ‘legendary icons’ from the sport’s history and see how they kick it next to Super Max and Hammer Time. (If Marcus Winkelhock isn’t on that roster, we’ll be writing a very strongly worded letter to EA, and possibly our local MP.)
Also joining the list of improvements in F1 24 is a new handling model which the developer’s calling ‘EA SPORTS Dynamic Handling’ and includes “new suspension kinematics, upgraded tyre model, advanced aerodynamic simulation, and new engine and car setup options".
Some young lad called Max Verstappen has helped Codemasters to develop that new handling model, so we’ll be going extra tentatively into that first chicane at Monza when we get our hands on it.
A handful of tracks have been reworked for greater detail and authenticity: Spa-Francorchamps, Lusail International Circuit and Jeddah will all feature in their upgraded finery.
Perhaps taking a leaf from Frontier’s F1 Manager series, samples of real race radio from the current drivers now feature in-game, which should dial up an extra notch of authenticity.
It’s not yet clear where audio samples of Sky Sports F1’s Crofty getting way too excited about an uneventful race start in which Verstappen breaks the DRS barrier within two corners will also feature.
