The what? The Chaparral 2E's influence on racer design is profound, being the first car built from the ground up to take advantage of downforce.

As well as its ducted nose, which channelled air to maximize grip, it had a massive wing that hovered four feet, six inches from the body and was mounted directly to the rear suspension uprights. This took the load off the chassis and put it directly on the hubs. You could adjust it on the fly, too.

Take RS4 Coupe, add three doors, get mad Audi estate. A 4.2-litre V8 revs to 8,250rpm, runs through a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission and puts out a prodigious 444bhp. That whittles the 0-60mph sprint down to an astonishing 4.4 seconds.

3576 were made during a four-year production run from 1980, and they are, in every tiny particular, ridiculous. As you will have gathered from the wide-boy inflatedness, they were built for Group 4 rallying homologation (the precursor to Group B). The engine, a turbochared 1.4-litre four-pot, was moved from the front into the middle, and drive was fed to the rear wheels.

The 5 Turbo only made 155bhp, but because there's just 970kg to lug around, it'll hit 62mph in 6.6 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 130mph.

At 725kg, the Elise is a profoundly lightweight thing. So when the company stuffed a Very High Performance Derivative (that was the actual name, fact fans) 192bhp version of the standard Rover K-series engine up it to create the Sport, the result was quite mad.

It got to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, and demonstrated why the Lotus founder Colin Chapman had spent all that time banging on about ‘adding lightness'. Turns out he was onto something.

Ah yes, the latest member of Ford's silly-engines-in-a-van family, a tradition that dates back to 1971. The first one, the Transit Supervan was based on a Ford GT40 and could hit 150 mph. Then there was the 1984 model, Supervan II, which had a Cosworth race engine and hit 178 mph at Silverstone.

This one is slightly less unhinged, but still has a pleasing 3.2-litre, 198bhp Duratorq TDCi engine taken from the much larger Transit Jumbo. Torquey.

Technically, this is a road car. Though you'll probably be more familiar with its evil twin, the R390 GT1 Le Mans GT1-class racer.

Thing is, the only real difference between track and road R390 was a set of silencers and a few indicators thrown in. It's still got a 3.5-litre V8 with a pair of turbos strapped on. That brings power up to a nervewracking 550bhp. And guess who designed it? Ian Callum, the bloke currently doing Very Pretty Things at Jaguar.

OK, so it's a bit more Battle of Baghdad than BTCC, but it does have a Duramax, intercooled turbodiesel, which gets it to 60 mph in, um, 13 seconds...

Littering the car park of every Top Gear studio filming session, the WRX STi has more than 300bhp and an adjustable differential that directs power to the front or rear wheels. Branded baseball cap not included.

With much luggjery and 306bhp, the G350 represents Japan's assault on posh Germany. The 5-Series-baiting GS350 F Sport is a superb sports cruiser, capable of driving around in quiet munificence. It's rapid rather than devastating, but still very pleasing company.
