An esports tournament is being played that'll only use Teslas

Battle of Polytopia players will be parking up onstage at OWN Valencia in July

Published: 27 May 2024

That tablet in the centre of your Tesla isn’t just for the reversing camera and impressing your passengers by showing them all the fascinating features you’ve in fact never used once. It’s also a gaming device, and at the OWN Valencia digital entertainment festival this July, it’s getting its own esports moment.

The game that players will be competing in is Battle of Polytopia by Swedish studio Midijwan, a turn-based 4X game in the classic Sid Meier’s Civilization mould. It’s faster, mind you - Civ might hold you in its thrall for a weekend, but Polytopia rattles along at Gen Z speeds. And crucially, it’s built for multiplayer.

In fact, now that Tesla has officially removed support for Steam games, it’s the only multiplayer title available on Tesla’s software ecosystem.

Our primitive brains are still struggling to visualise what an esports tournament played from inside a bunch of Teslas would actually look like and how it would work at a festival, but while we continue sketching our conceptions onto napkins here’s Midijwan general manager Christian Lövstedt’s thoughts on the matter: “OWN is a fantastic event that brings the tech-loving community together, so we can't wait to see the best of the best Battle of Polytopia players fight it out here in Valencia.

“Even better, competing in Tesla vehicles is a fantastic showcase of the intersection between the cutting edge of technology and the top strategic minds in gaming.”

In more traditional esports news, League of Legends players will also be at OWN to compete in Super League matches, and the grand final of the Valorant Rising tournament (think Red Bull rookies for Valorant players) will also be held there.

The event’s taking place from 5-7 July. We don’t recommend trying to drive your Model 3 up onto the stage - the Polytopia tournament’s invite only.
