Check out this stunning drift sequence that’s been turned into an arcade game replay
Corvette drifts around Laguna Seca complete with drift multipliers and in-game lobby screens
Mounting a 360-degree camera to a drift car is nothing new, but submerging the resulting footage in arcade racing game-like dials and graphics? That is, and we’re all for it.
Those familiar with renowned pop-culture games like Burnout and Need for Speed will be no strangers to this sort of format, but even with today’s five million pixel resolution, never has arcade gaming looked this good. Or real.
The video was filmed by a group called Drift Kings - who probably spend their weekends gardening and attending book club meets - and captures a not-at-all modified Chevrolet Corvette C6 slithering around California’s Laguna Seca Raceway. It quite literally places viewers in the eye of the storm. And yes, they did send it flying through the Corkscrew too, the loonies.
In fact, on his first attempt at the track’s most infamous corner, the driver - four-time Formula Drift winner, Matt Field - actually loses control of his C6. But in a wonderfully quirky touch, the footage is edited to reverse the segment back before Matt’s second attempt is successful.
The video also includes plenty of POV shots and ‘waiting screen’ graphics which go as far as dunking viewers into a lobby. Once the actual ‘game’ starts, the editor has even thrown in score graphics and multipliers for stitching together a sequence of drifts. It’s brilliant.
Plenty of other cool cars are seen joining Matt and his C6 in shredding tyres and cutting shapes, including a Nissan Silvia 200SX (stock), a Toyota Supra A90 (also stock), and countless 3 Series BMs (more stock than when they left the factory). And while this may be the first time a day of drifting has been turned into a real-life arcade game, we certainly don’t expect it to be the last.
