Art of Rally developer returns with minimalist offroad exploration game Over The Hill
Clubbing days behind you? Why not take it out on some gravel...
You may remember Art of Rally, the 2020 indie racing game that made loose surface driving feel like reading meditative poems in a room full of beautiful watercolour paintings. Quite a special experience, that, which is why we’re excited to hear about developer Funselektor’s latest project, Over The Hill.
To nip any confusion in the bud, it isn’t a game about getting into air fryers, posting things on your neighbourhood Facebook group and listening to the Foo Fighters. Instead, the name refers to the project’s freeform, exploration-first nature.
According to the official reveal announcement, it’s a “free-roaming offroad exploration game sporting the iconic minimalist art style perfected in Art of Rally.
“Take your vehicle off the familiar race tracks and onto untravelled paths across lush summer meadows, snowy mountain ranges and many more of the beautiful minimalistic environments, either by yourself or with a friend.”
To make all the exploration feel sufficiently varied and rewarding, there’s a day-night cycle, a weather system and multiple different biome types. So you might drive across dry tundra in the morning, along rain-soaked tarmac roads, and then into woodland wilderness by nightfall.
There is a bit of structure to bring all those elements together, though. “Hidden gems, objectives and challenges such as offroad trails are scattered across the maps, waiting for you to uncover and complete them as you travel through enchanting sceneries.”
Over The Hill is due to release on Steam later this year.
