Porsche has teamed up with Airstream to create this futuristic camper
One sweet concept travel trailer debuts at the SXSW festival, and we want a go
What if you take two icons in the auto travel world and brief them to make an equally iconic campervan concept? That’s the question Studio F. A. Porsche and Airstream asked themselves when they created this classy travel trailer.
Alive in digital renderings and a one-third scale model - set to make an appearance at the infamous South By Southwest culture festival in Austin, Texas - the Airstream Studio F. A. Porsche Concept Travel Trailer arguably has everything you need (except a shorter, catchier name).
Porsche is attending the festival as the marque celebrates its 75th anniversary, showcasing the theme ‘Porsche X’ - how wonderfully short.
The shrunken aluminium riveted creation, towed (in theory) by a Porsche Macan combines the DNA of these two design powerhouses, maintaining the unique look of an Airstream but integrating Porsche-inspired features, such as a pop-up roof and lower suspension, to give it more practicality i.e. enable garage storage.
The new rear shape - reliant on more carbon fibre to ease the weight - of the Airstream is designed to improve aerodynamics and the surround glass tinted windows are more Airstream Basecamp than Airstream Caravel. The interior is cleverly scoped to maximise living space, as well as keep it super functional. For which read: lots of hinges and hidden cubbies. Unusually, Airstream provides a floorplan.
The collaborative effort can hook up to a power supply, or generate its own from the solar panels on the roof and lithium battery combo, giving potential owners the flexibility to travel anywhere. The brands hope to inspire a different demographic with the trailer that has a smaller footprint than other Airstreams.
