Elysia is a new battery tech brand founded by motorsport experts

WAE Technologies creates subsidiary to focus on battery R&D

Published: 19 Apr 2023

No stranger to the hybridisation of motorsport or turning mining trucks into electrified workhorses, WAE Technologies, once known as Williams Advanced Engineering, has created its own spin-off brand, Elysia, to focus on something that it calls 'battery intelligence'.

The new outfit – which likely features a bunch of (not so new) WAE faces – apparently intends to specialise in battery innovation, research and development.

Hoping to ‘unlock significant improvements’ in battery life, safety, use, durability, power, charge times and energy storage, WAE says Elysia will be using a proprietary cloud platform to enable better battery management and optimisation for car makers, fleet operators and those investing in EV and e-mobility solutions.

According to WAE, using data to give carmakers and customers more information on battery life and battery safety could have a direct impact on manufacturer warranties and vehicle resale values. All sounds pretty good then, especially since battery life is one of the bigger consumer concerns for those considering the switch to electric.

We're also told that cars using Elysia's embedded battery management software could see a 30 per cent increase in battery life and 10 per cent increase in battery range.

Joe Jones, Elysia commercial lead, said: “The battery in any electric vehicle of any kind represents the single most valuable system by far. Better understanding of battery systems will transform how we manage them, in order to realise their full potential.

“Elysia, Battery Intelligence from WAE, opens up a new era of electrification, born on the racetrack, but designed for the real world. It brings a new generation of battery intelligence to a wide range of industries, from the automotive and e-mobility sectors, to stationary energy storage and beyond. Elysia’s unique capabilities offer unprecedented insight and foresight, unleashing untapped performance, life and safety to every electric vehicle, and every battery on the planet.

“We are providing easy to interpret, actionable battery insights to give OEMs, fleets and battery asset financiers unprecedented transparency, allowing them to optimise a battery and improve its performance and the value it delivers over the course of its life.”
