It’s the new Skoda Yeti!

Skoda has announced that its Yeti compact SUV has been given a nip and a tuck. And on first impressions, we kind of wished they'd left it alone.

This is because the Skoda Yeti is a bit of a Top Gear favourite: it won our car of the year award a few years back, and who can forget Jeremy's Very Thorough Road Test of the loveable little tyke on telly?

And the reason we wish it so, is because we think the earlier generation looks a bit nicer. Gone is the quirkiness, and in comes a more generic - dare we say it - more VW-ey corporate face. It doesn't look as cheeky, just a bit angry.

We're told it'll come in two variants - a city version, and an off-road version. Both are simply cosmetic trim lines, but they get a redesigned grille with new headlights, a new tailgate with ‘distinctive tail lights', some cubist triangular elements, new alloy wheel options and a new steering wheel, fabric and pattern for the inside. It even comes with a rear-view camera for the first time.

The city version gets body-coloured bumpers, side mouldings and door sills, while the off-road one gets these elements in a fetching black plastic.

The important stuff remains the same; it sits on the same underpinnings as before, the VarioFlex rear seat system is in place, there's acres of headroom and the boot's huge; 405 litres with the seats up, 1760 with them down.

We're told the new Skoda Yeti will be available with seven engines - four diesels and three petrol units - ranging from a 1.2-litre TSI with 105bhp, to the 2.0-litre diesel producing 170bhp. A DSG twin-clutch gearbox is an option over the standard six-speed manual, while you can even plump for a Haldex-coupling all-wheel-drive variant.

Then there's the ultra-eco version, the ‘GreenLine', which features a 1.6-litre diesel, front-wheel-drive, a manual gearbox and emissions of just 119g/km and a claimed economy of 61mpg.

It'll get a world premiere at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, so we'll report back and tell you whether it looks any nicer in real life. But what do you think, dot.commers?
