Woah! Watch Williams completely rebuild two trashed F1 cars…
… in just six days. Behind the scenes vid reveals heroic team effort at Williams HQ
Check this out. Williams has lifted the lid on its incredible double rebuild in the aftermath of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in which both of its cars ended up in an F1-sized bin bag following heavy crashes at a drenched Interlagos.
It wasn’t as simple as conjuring up two cars from scratch, though: this is the cost cap era, therefore the team had to wait several days to ship the car back to its base in Grove to work out what could be salvaged and what was destined for the scrapheap.
“I think we’re going to need another bin at this rate,” says one mechanic, which tells you pretty much all you need to know.
Not only that, the team only had a week to turn everything around before the cars needed to be back on a crate and freighted to Las Vegas for the race weekend. Eep.
Cue the music, motivational confectionary and a string of all-nighters. Hundreds of Williams folk all chipped in, meticulously assessing every single component; ordering new parts where necessary and servicing everything still race-worthy.
“We love it,” says car assembly supervisor Rob Clayton… at almost 1am in the early stages of the job. “We might not say it all the time, but we do love it. It’s good, yeah really good.”
And so much for the rumour that Williams wouldn’t make it to Vegas: the team said earlier this week that it would be present and correct in Sin City. Maybe without quite as much rest as it would’ve liked.
Ladies and gentlemen of Williams, take a well-deserved bow.
