What’s this hardcore Cayman prototype?
Is Porsche readying a Cayman even faster than the lovely GT4? A (slightly) camo-clad prototype of what looks like a track-spec version of the mid-engined two-seater has been spotted at the Monza race circuit in Italy, sending the TG office into collective overdrive.
But what is the prototype prototyping, exactly? Well, we've only got some handycam footage from a well-placed lurker to go on, but the video reveals a few salient details.
If you hit play above, you'll notice that the Cayman has more aggressive rubber wrapped around lightweight racing wheels, wider side pods to feed the engine with more air, a bigger rear wing and new front and rear bumpers.
And unless our ears mistake us, the camo Cayman is packing a freer-flowing exhaust system, too, its flat-six sounding fruitier than ever.
And is it just us, or does that sound like a sequential box to you? Get your dog-box tuning key out and prick your ears up for a listen. They sure as hell sound like bang-through-the-box quick changes to us.
The prototype looks to sit even lower than the Cayman GT4, while the way it ricochets itself off Monza's monstrous kerbs indicates a stiffer suspension set-up.
Looks closely and you'll see the prototype is sporting a rollcage: something the driver was probably thankful for as he lost control and dropped the car into the gravel at the 50-second mark.
So what is it? Much as we'd love this to be a road-going Cayman yet hotter than the GT4 (GT4 RS? GT3? GT3 RS?), it's more likely a prototype of a track-only racer to compete in the FIA's GT4 class against Aston Martin Vantage GT4, BMW Z4 and the recently unveiled KTM X-Bow GT4.
But what do you reckon? Hit play to watch one lucky driver giving it all the beans at the home of Italian racing. There's glorious, glorious noise, too, so make sure your speakers are cranked up...
