Want to own a McLaren P1 for £400? This 1:8 scale Lego Technic set should see to that
Over 3,800 pieces form part of the set, including the V8 hybrid engine and intelligent suspension. Just don't step on it
McLaren P1s can be quite tricky to get a hold of these days… given that they’re commanding sizable inflations to their original million-pound price tags. And given only 375 units ever left the factory. No matter, because you can now purchase a 1:8 scale Lego-fied version that’ll cost you a considerable amount less. Nor will you be scared to get a few scratches and scrapes on it.
The details are very much the same: the V8 hybrid engine sits in astonishing detail behind the driver, with the P1's suspension, adjustable rear wing and dihedral doors forming part of the other cool features.
There’s a total of 3,893 pieces to assemble (mind where you step), and fully built, will measure in at 5.5in high, 22in long and 9.5in wide. So you’ll need to flesh out a fairly spacious opening somewhere along the TV stand or cabinet for storage. But, unlike most actual P1s, we think this one may be released from said storage on occasion to hound around its local (and carpeted) racetrack.
Kasper Rene Hansen, a lead designer at the Lego group, said: “From the exterior with aerodynamic shapes to the interior and piston engine, the real McLaren P1 is an incredible car. We wanted to capture these details in the best way possible with our Technic model and did not want to compromise in any way.
“Therefore, we worked on multiple variations of the car to test different designs. We also faced a huge challenge with the butterfly doors because they needed a new mechanism to stay open. It was a great experience to recreate the P1 and I’m hoping all supercar enthusiasts out there are ready to explore the details and intricacies in Technic form.”
You can order your set here for a penny below £400 from 1 August, which should give you plenty of time to map out a suitable course and paint tyre walls onto your skirting boards.
