Volkswagen confirms a T-Roc convertible. Really

Yes, VW’s first ever convertible SUV is coming, on the roads from 2020

Published: 26 Feb 2018

Volkswagen has committed an €80 million investment into its Osnabrück plant. And the reason we are telling you this is because its Osnabrück plant will build the company’s first ever convertible SUV.

Yes folks, undeterred by what rational human beings make of such things, Volkswagen has confirmed today that it intends to build a T-Roc cabriolet.

“Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand,” explains VW CEO Dr Herbert Diess. “With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range.”

It’ll certainly stir the emotions, that’s for sure. It’s being planned for 2020, and technically, there’s little other info at this early stage. No doubt it’ll be a tad heavier to compensate for the lack of roof. Expect a range of powertrains including 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrol models, and a mix of FWD and 4WD.

Though the regular T-Roc was a car we found to be decent – and certainly striking enough to look at – scratch a little below the surface and you’ll find a slightly poor relation to the Golf. Which is basically the best ‘ordinary’ hatchback in the business. Read TG's full review of it here.

Crossovers are where the money is at these days, though. Since its launch, VW has already taken more than 40,000 orders for the regular T-Roc crossover, and by 2020 it expects 40 per cent of its models sold to be SUVs.
