The US-spec Ford Mustang GT just got pointier and grippier
US-only, 'Performance Pack Level 2' upgrade provides a new shape, tyres and brakes
Americans, time to dust off those driving gloves and ready your finest apex-splitting grimaces. Ford has been busy tinkering with the Mustang GT, and the result is this: the Performance Pack Level 2.
Not a fiendishly difficult end-of-level video game boss, but instead, a shot of adrenalin. From the off, you can see the ‘Stang's more aggressive stance. There’s a custom high-performance front splitter and rear spoiler, designed to add more downforce into the corners, with black detailing, and exclusive ten-spoke alloys.
New wheels and tyres are a big addition to the Level 2, with 305/30/R19 Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres fitted on split-fitment aluminium wheels. That’s 1.5in wider than the Level 1 pack, so provide a firmer grip and get the car more than half an inch closer to the ground.
It also includes all of the features from Performance Pack Level 1: retuned ABS and stability control, six-piston calipers, a silver strut tower brace... the kit list really adds up.
Jamie Cullen, Ford supervisor for vehicle dynamics development, was in charge of the road tests to ensure the car delivers ultra-responsive steering, braking and handling performance. He said of the Level 2: “It will just beg you to go faster. The car has lightning-quick response and never gives up grip.” Though this sounds like a challenge, perhaps a warning should be applied, too...
In any case, the pack will be available in North American showrooms in spring next year, and while prices haven’t been confirmed, it’s rumoured the Level 2 will be a $6,500 upgrade (an extra £5k).
