Shelby has revived the GT350R with this 840bhp, big-winged special
It’s joined by a slightly less powerful GT350, with both cars celebrating the original's 60th anniversary
Exactly 60 years on from the release of the original, Shelby is bringing back the GT350 and GT350R badges with these seventh-gen modified Mustangs. Who’s up for some good old-fashioned noise and smoke?
Both cars deploy the Whipple supercharged 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ V8 from the regular Mustang, though power has been upped quite substantially from 447bhp to 840bhp in the 350R. That’s an increase of 88 per cent. Indeed, the last car to wear a GT350R badge produced over 300bhp less. Shelby hasn't revealed a 0-60mph time, but the standard Mustang does it in 4.4s.
Other bits bespoke to the 350R include adjustable racing struts and a new set of shocks to go with the stiffer chassis setup, plus Alcon racing brakes to neutralise all those horsies. There’s lots of extra carbon attached to the shoutier body, in sections like the bonnet, rocker panels and ducktail rear wing.
The interior gets a mild refresh too, gaining even more carbon plus a four-point roll-cage. Ford’s original 12.4in digital display and 13.2in touchscreen should stay put.
If all this seems a bit OTT for you, there's a only fractionally tamer 820bhp in the 350. That's still more power than a McLaren Senna, mind. It gets a set of lowering springs to retain the 350R's mean stance, plus a cat-back Borla exhaust and 20in forged alloys accompanied by the vintage striping.
The 350 currently starts at $109.995, with a price yet to be confirmed for the 350R.
