The Omoda 7 is a new 745-mile hybrid SUV coming your way this August
Powered by a 1.5-litre hybrid four-pot, you’ll get 345bhp and up to 56 miles of all-electric range
Ready for yet another compact SUV? This is the Omoda 7 PHEV: the Chery-backed brand's latest creation, equipped with its SHS (Super Hybrid System) powertrain that’s good here for a claimed range of 745 miles. 56 of those are estimated to be as green as Popeye’s go-to snack.
Omoda said the hybrid setup - comprised of a 1.5-litre turbo four-pot, battery and e-motor - achieves a claimed 44.5 per cent thermal efficiency rating, and also a strong 345bhp and 387lb ft. It'll crack through to 62mph in 8.5s.
Omoda hasn't confirmed what size battery will be slotted in alongside the engine, but we do know it’ll support rapid charging and see a 30-80 per cent refill in just 20 minutes.
There’s some interesting styling cues worth pointing out too. The grille looks like it’s made of chain mail and with the sort of pattern you see on most streamers’ walls, while the rear gets lighting bolt-like lamp signatures. That shape sits right between the existing ‘5’ and the forthcoming ‘9’ too: it’s not quite as curvy as the former, but nor is it as straight and blocky as the latter. It’s almost like it’s… somewhere in-between the two. Who’d have thought.
The cabin remains another grey area, with Omoda holding out on telling us too much ahead of the 7’s initial deliveries in August. But at the very least we’re expecting it to get the combined 20.5in infotainment setup, reverse camera and dual-zone climate control from the range-topping 5. Should that be the case, you can probably add heated front seats, smartphone connectivity and a Sony audio system to that list too.
Pricing is yet to be announced for the 7, but expect it to sit somewhere in the mid-30s to position it between the E5 (£32k) and the 9 (£45k). And yep, it’ll come with that tempting seven-year/100,000-mile warranty too.
