The new Nissan Frontier Pro is a sleeper super truck with over 400bhp

Initially only available in China, further markets will apparently be announced soon

Published: 24 Apr 2025

In partnership with local manufacturer Dongfeng, Nissan makes a number of fairly run-of-the-mill pickup trucks in China. Usually, a new iteration of one of these workhorses wouldn’t generate huge excitement here at TG Towers, but this fresh Frontier Pro is a little bit different.

You see, the brilliantly chunky thing you see above will actually be sold in other markets outside of China (although there’s no confirmation of where just yet). Oh, and it has 402bhp and 590lb ft of torque. Yep, it’s a bit of a sleeper super truck.

It’s also Nissan’s first ever plug-in hybrid thanks to its 1.5-litre turbocharged four-pot engine and gearbox-mounted electric motor. Should be a decent sized battery too because Zhengzhou Nissan (the joint venture responsible for the Frontier Pro) is claiming 84 miles of EV only range.

There’s also all-wheel drive, five-link rear suspension and an electromechanical rear diff lock. Plus you get a V2L port to power accessories while out in the wild, and there’s an electronic retractable roll top to cover the bed.

The styling is pretty rad too, with those LEDs up front supposed to hark back to the 1980s Nissan D21 hardbody pickup. The rest is much the same as the petrol and diesel Nissan Dongfeng Z9 upon which the Frontier Pro is based, but that’s no bad thing.

On the inside there’s seating for five and a giant 14.6in infotainment screen. There’s also a 10in LCD dial display, a panoramic roof as standard and the option of heated, cooled and massaging front seats. Posh pickup too, it seems.

Sales will begin in China before the end of the year, but we’ll have to wait to see where else the Frontier Pro will make it. Reckon it should be UK-bound to take on things like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max? Heck, with over 400bhp on tap it should be able to dispatch even a Ranger Raptor in a straight line.
