The new Ford Bronco ‘Stroppe’ pays homage to the original Baja 1000 winner from ‘69

Throwback livery and a bit more off-road-focused engineering. Is this the best Bronco special edition yet?

Published: 15 Oct 2024

At this point, there are probably more special editions of the sixth-generation Ford Bronco than there are types of cheese in the world. And now, predictably, there’s another, but this one is a bit more special because it’s actually from 1969… sort of.

Dubbed the ‘Stroppe’ Special Edition, it takes after the legendary Baja 1000-winning Bronco of that year, with its 'Code Orange' (read: orange) body, 'Atlas Blue' (we think: blue?) roof and 'Oxford White' (probably white) mid-section.

The name is inspired by the man who built that Baja winner in the first place: Bill Stroppe. He essentially spent the Sixties and Seventies souping-up Broncos to the point where they could probably traverse a 10,000-foot mountain of cheese with ease.

There’s a minor mechanical overhaul too, including a new damping system for improved control and the inclusion of the ‘GOAT’ (Go Over Any Terrain) mode, which does many things to the traction control and differentials to, well, allow the Bronco go over any terrain.

You’ll also get a stiffer stabiliser bar, off-road suspension and 35in Goodyear 'Territory RT' tyres wrapped around 17in matte black beadlock ring alloys. Looks like a few badges have been nicked from the Sasquatch Searcher too.

The Stroppe is based on the two-door ‘Wildtrak’, so the powertrain is an unchanged 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 with 335bhp, 415lb ft, all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic gearbox to knit that lot together.

Ford says it will go on sale this January, but has given no confirmation of prices or estimated delivery dates as yet. Better scope out a 10,000-foot cheese mountain for that first test in the interim…
