New AGTZ Twin Tail: what's this mysterious new Zagato all about?
Famous Italian coachbuilder teases "homage to a forgotten Le Mans icon"...
Well this has got our attention. Zagato is one of the survivors of the great Italian design and coachbuilding tradition, and the image you see here teases an “homage to a forgotten Le Mans icon”. No, not the guy who kept the vending machine in the press room stocked into the wee small hours, but an endurance racer that looked the part but never fulfilled its competition potential.
“One car. Two souls” is pretty much all we know right now, though we’re promised a “contemporary GT car with an utterly captivating twist”. Oh, and the name: AGTZ Twin Tail.
Zagato, of course, has clothed some of the all-time greats during its – gulp – 105-year existence. Early gems included the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750, with which the great Tazio Nuvolari – Enzo Ferrari’s favourite driver of all time – won the Mille Miglia in 1930. Adventures in aviation-inspired light weighting gave way to dramatically proportioned limited-run cars for Abarth, Aston Martin, Bristol, Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche and more.
TG.com confidently cites the Zagato-bodied Aston Martin DB4 GT (1961), Alfa Romeo TZ1 and 2 (1963-7), and Lancia Flaminia (1963) as among the most jaw-slackeningly beautiful cars ever. Things got weird in the Seventies – check the Zele, an early EV proposal – but Zagato persevered and has never been anything less than entertaining.
So what else do we know about his new project? Details are currently sketchy, but the AGTZ Twin Tail marks a collaboration with Polish supercar presence La Squadra, an impressive operation that distributes Alpine, Bugatti, Ferrari, Koenigsegg, Maserati, and Pagani in the territory. A strong pivot to the more experiential side of retail has helped burnish La Squadra’s reputation, and amongst other achievements Ferrari selected it as its top dealer worldwide in 2022. That’s no mean feat.
La Squadra will handle all the sales and marketing for the new collab with Zagato, which will fabricate the new car in its Milan atelier. “We will cater to the desires of discerning collectors who seek exclusive and provocative cars which push design boundaries,” the new double act declares.
We’ll know more next week. But until then, La Squadra’s associated brands are listed above. Get thinking…
