Mugen has created an even more hardcore Honda Civic Type R with ‘Gr.A’ and ‘Gr.B’ spin-offs
Changes centre primarily around improved aero, but we expect a small drivetrain upgrade to also be issued
Mugen, the tuning and motorsport division of Honda, has teased two new variants of the current-generation Civic Type R (FL5). Dubbed the ‘Gr.A’ and ‘Gr.B’, the upgrades focus largely on improved aero through revised bodywork.
Finished in Rallye Red, the Gr.A takes things up a notch from the already bonkers standard car with an all-new front bumper design, which mates a wider front lip with larger vents on either side. Bigger side skirts are also seen along the flanks, while a more pronounced rear spoiler, which is both wider and longer than the original, sits as proudly at the back as Joffrey Baratheon did on the Iron Throne. It's likely to contribute to an even more chaotic experience, just like Joffrey did too.
With the Gr.B, an even bigger front splitter and side skirts can be seen, complemented by a more dramatic bonnet and front arch vents. The exposed mesh front grille has also been ditched in favour of a more aggressive, race car-esque closed design. The new parts look to be made of carbon fibre on the Gr.B and dominate the silver coat, resulting in the sort of mock-up you’d find in the back of a six-year-old’s maths book.
No word yet on any mechanical changes, but Mugen tends to make small power and handling improvements to any standard Honda model it fettles with. So expect a marginal increase over the 315bhp, 310lb ft of torque and 171mph top speed provided by the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which is already aided by some sort of mechanical wizardy called ‘VTEC’.
Pricing is also being kept hush, but we expect the standard car’s starting price of £47k to be pushed closer to the £55k threshold.
Founded in 1973 by Hirotoshi Honda, Mugen Motorsport was essentially created to spark the manufacturer’s motorsport pedigree in competitions like the Japanese Super GT championship, and even partnered up for a stint in Formula One. Away from its on-track antics, Mugen is also known for modifying factory Honda models to make them a bit more appealing to rowdies and juveniles alike.
