Mini introduces retro entry-level 1499 GT

Supermini is inspired by the 1969 classic, the 1275 GT

Published: 11 Oct 2017

Mini has reinvented the supermini yet again with its new entry-level model, launching in special edition GT styling, named the 1499 GT. It’s inspired by one of Mini’s best-known sporty classics, the 1275 GT original from 1969, and is limited to just 1,499 cars.

With a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine replacing the current 1.2 entry option, the 1499 GT kicks out 102bhp with a 0-60mph time of 10.1 seconds, and is available in a rudimentary black or white with black wheels. It also gets distinctive John Cooper Works bumpers, skirts and spoilers, plus all the standard One Hatch features like independent rear suspension, six-speed ‘box and air conditioning. Inside it gets JCW sports seats with red stitching and Mini Connected smartphone capability.

The original 1275 GT is “one of the best known sporty classic Minis of all time”, according to Mini, and was renowned at the time for having “an entertaining drive, distinctive styling and low running costs”, all of which have been mimicked in this modern revival. Exclusive gold decals nod to the original styling, which was used at the time to highlight the upgrade in engine size - likewise with the new 1499.

The 1499 GT is available to order now exclusively for the UK market with a glittering price tag starting at £16,990. Snap yours up now ready for delivery in November.
