The MG Cyber X is a boxy SUV concept with pop-up headlights

MG’s newest SUV does upwardly mobile in a very literal way

Published: 23 Apr 2025

MG has unveiled a boxy SUV concept it’s calling Cyber X. Following up to the sporty Cyberster, the Cyber X very joyfully brings back pop-up headlights.

The MG Cyber X’s front end features a wrap-around light strip and a deep grille grinning with dimples. Frankly, the combination of those headlights, the additional illuminated bar and badge, the matte gunmetal paint job, privacy glass and dual-tone rims suggest there’s a transformer lurking under the shell of the thing. Clearly, the MG design team nailed the brief.

Why? The Cyber X forms part of the Cyber series aimed at younger folk. It’ll sit on a fully electric platform with an integrated cell-to-body battery, built by parent company SAIC. The carmaker has said it's a ‘city adventure toy’ with ‘the attitude of exploration and adventure’. Don't expect any 4x4 smarts, but do expect to see plenty of connected cabin tech.

It’ll look to rival the Smart Hashtag Five, (and perhaps all those in the market for a Chelsea Tractor at a Ford Mondeo price) but MG told TopGear.com the Cyber X is "a showcase for MG’s design capabilities and explores potential". While we're 99.9 per cent certain it'll get made, production and release to the global market is yet to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, MG's updated the all-electric Cyberster for 2026. Tweaks to the two-seater sports car include adjustments to the aerodynamics, more boot space, and upgrades in the tech – specifically the electric lumbar support and voice control. It's got a matrix of artificial sounds, too.

Plus, MG intends to release another eight models in the next couple of years. More as we get it.
