The LSR-05 is a new tri-motor electric crossover coupe with loads of fancy tech

Japan's THK teases its first car, which will usher in future EV advancements

Published: 07 Dec 2023

THK, a Japanese tech brand which focuses on component development and manufacturing, has now previewed the first fully functioning example of its LSR-05 electric car. It exhibits a string of newly-developed tech such as in-wheel motors and wireless charging, with the former being similar to a recently revealed invention by Hyundai and Kia.

The new car, billed the LSR-05, has been created in partnership with renowned car designer and former Nissan senior vice president, Shiro Nakamura, and is a four-seat crossover coupe. It features a four-wheel steering system that marries a pair of 93kW variable-flux in-wheel electric motors at the rear with a 22kW single electric motor at the front.

The LSR-05 also has a system called ‘Active Level Control Suspension’ (ALCS), which automatically adjusts the car’s height depending on its speed and sounds eerily similar to a type of technology that’s already being applied widely across the industry.

The ALCS then works in tandem with THK’s electronically-controlled ‘MR Fluid Active Damper Tube’, which utilises ball screws to absorb and dampen vehicle inputs to create a more seamless reaction to body roll. Yep, we’ve definitely never heard that line from any emerging brand before.

The LSR-05 does however feature a nifty system called ‘dynamic wireless power transfer’, which enables ‘contactless’ power shifts between the drivetrain to improve efficiency.

CEO and president of THK, Akihiro Teramachi, said: “The LSR-05 represents THK's perspective on the future of mobility. We created this vehicle as a platform to demonstrate both the value of THK’s innovation and how we can accelerate the development of next-generation vehicle technologies.”
