Let’s all wince at the Mini Clubman’s new tail-lights

Big Mini gets some patriotic new lights and, erm, little else…

Published: 16 Apr 2019

For 2019 Mini has given the Clubman - the big, five-door not-mini Mini with the vertically split tailgate - quite possibly the world’s most minor facelift. Ten Internet Points to the first person to correctly identify all the changes. And GO.

Given up already? Us too. We’re told the big changes - well, we say ‘big’ - are the new lights front and rear. The former are of the clever LED Matrix variety, while the latter are styled to resemble the Union Jack, just as they are in the little Mini hatchback. The front lights are separated by a new grille, a hexagonal pattern has replaced the old car’s horizontal struts. What do you mean you'd missed that?

New paint colours and alloy wheel designs are both on offer too, and inside there are new upholstery and trim options.

The only thing new mechanically is a new 'Sport' suspension option, offering a 10mm drop and supposedly better handling. As for engines, there will still be three-cylinder Cooper and four-cylinder Cooper D and Cooper S versions variously available with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearboxes. No Mercedes A35-rivalling 300bhp, all-wheel drive JCW just yet, then.

Sales start this month, with prices from £21,200.
