Jaecoo’s next UK-bound car is the 250-mile ‘5’ EV
It’ll be sold alongside a cheaper ICE alternative, which packs a 183bhp four-pot
Jaecoo’s second model for the UK, the 5 EV, is all set to launch this summer, largely mirroring the Omoda E5 but adopting a revised platform, more rugged looks and placing a bigger impetus on off-road capabilities.
The front-driven 204bhp e-motor and 61kWh battery will be plugged in from its opposite number, and is confirmed to share the 250(ish)-mile range output and 7.2s 0-62mph time. Charging speeds are yet to be confirmed, but do consider the Omoda E5 takes 30 minutes to get from 10-80 per cent at its max rate of 80kW.
In case your brain isn’t frazzled enough at this point, we’ve also been told the Jaecoo 5 will be offered with an ICE powertrain which mirrors… the Omoda 5. That means a 183bhp 1.6-litre turbo four-pot, 0-62 in 7.9s and a top speed of 128mph.
Compared to the Omoda, the Jaecoo gets fancier materials inside and a cleaner-looking centre console, which connects directly to the tablet-like infotainment screen. There’s a pair of charging ports nestled in there too, and we’re big fans of the imitation carbon ‘ledge’ on the bottom-half of the steering wheel.
The good form continues outside, where the Jaecoo 5 looks like a slightly shrunken Jaecoo 7 - itself a handsome car. So up front you’ll still get that lardy chrome grille, above are thick roof rails and at the back there's lots of plastic and underbody protection. It does get a different headlight signature and fog lamp cluster, though, and said lardy grille comes with partitions along each beam. Very nice.
Deliveries of the Jaecoo 5 EV and ICE models are scheduled for this August, with prices for the electric version likely hovering around the £32k mark, and dropping significantly for the petrol powered one at around £25k.
